Index Coverage Report: Understanding GSC Errors

You can write the most authoritative, perfectly optimized article in your industry. You can build hundreds of high-quality backlinks pointing directly to it. But if Google refuses to add that URL to its database, your traffic will be exactly zero.

The Google Search Console Indexing report (formerly known as Index Coverage) is the diagnostic center for your site’s technical health. It tells you exactly how many pages Google knows about, and more importantly, why it is actively ignoring the rest.

If you see a massive spike in the gray “Not Indexed” bucket, you need to understand the technical nuances of the errors to fix them.

The Cost of Indexing Ignorance

Failing to manage your index coverage is essentially leaving money on the table. Every page that goes unindexed due to avoidable errors is a wasted opportunity for traffic, conversions, and revenue, regardless of how high-quality the content actually is.

Crawled vs. Discovered

The two most common, and most frustrating, statuses in the report are “Discovered - currently not indexed” and “Crawled - currently not indexed.” While they sound similar, they represent entirely different technical failures.

Discovered means Google knows the URL exists (likely from a sitemap or an internal link) but decided not to crawl it. For large e-commerce or programmatic sites, this is almost always a Crawl Budget issue. Google’s bots hit a wall of millions of parameter URLs and ran out of resources before they could reach your new content.

Crawled means the bot actually visited the page, read the HTML, and then decided it wasn’t worth putting in the index. This is a quality issue. The algorithm likely determined the page was too thin, offered no unique value, or was a victim of severe Keyword Cannibalization with a stronger page already in the index.

Server Errors (5xx) vs. Soft 404s

When Google attempts to crawl a page and your server crashes or times out, it logs a 5xx error. If you see a spike in 5xx errors, you need to wake up your DevOps team immediately. Google actively demotes websites that frequently crash during crawls, assuming the user experience will be equally terrible.

A Soft 404 is much more insidious. Your server returns a 200 (Success) status code, telling Google the page is fine. However, the content on the page says “Product Out of Stock” or is completely blank. Google’s algorithm recognizes the discrepancy and slaps a Soft 404 label on it, removing it from the index.

You must find these pages and either populate them with real content or issue a proper 410 (Gone) status code.

Fixing Index Bloat

A healthy Indexing report is not about getting every single URL on your domain indexed. In fact, trying to index everything usually destroys your site authority.

If your CMS automatically generates thousands of author archive pages, tag pages, and search result pages, and Google indexes them all, you suffer from Index Bloat. The overall authority of your domain is diluted across thousands of useless URLs.
