The Hidden Value of Question-Based Search Queries (FAQs)

Kong Metrics Team · · 3 min read

“How do I…?” “What is the best…?” “Why does my…?”

These are the most valuable words in SEO. People use Google primarily to find answers to specific problems. If your website can provide the clearest, most authoritative answer to their question, you win the click.

This strategy is known as targeting Informational Intent, and the best way to execute it is by mining your Google Search Console data for question-based queries.

Mining GSC for Questions

If your website already has a decent amount of content, Google is likely already testing your pages for thousands of informational questions.

To find them in the GSC web interface, you must use a Custom Regex filter: ^(how|what|why|when|where|is|can|does|do)\b.

This will instantly filter your performance report to show only queries that start with a question word.

Winning the PAA Box

When you run this filter, pay close attention to your Average Position column.

If you see a question query (e.g., “how to fix a leaky faucet”) where you rank at Position #12, you have found an incredible opportunity. You are in Striking Distance.

Because Google loves to answer questions directly via “People Also Ask” (PAA) boxes and Featured Snippets, optimizing for these specific queries yields massive ROI.

The Execution Strategy

  1. Automate the Mining: Instead of typing Regex strings, use the Kong Metrics Opportunity Scoring tool. It automatically finds these Page 2 question queries and prioritizes them based on potential traffic gain.
  2. Add an FAQ Section: Take the top 5 questions Kong Metrics identifies for a specific topic. Go to your existing article that is ranking on Page 2, and add a dedicated “Frequently Asked Questions” section at the bottom.
  3. Use FAQ Schema: Format those 5 questions with proper FAQPage Schema Markup.
  4. Answer Concisely: Answer the question directly and concisely (under 50 words) immediately below the H3 question header.

Why Question Targeting Matters

By focusing on informational intent, you address the core needs of your audience, building trust and authority. This, in turn, boosts rankings across all your content. By systematically harvesting question-based queries from your GSC data, you not only improve your standard blue-link rankings, but you drastically increase your chances of capturing the massive traffic windfalls of Featured Snippets and PAA boxes.
