How to Create an SEO Prioritization Matrix Using GSC
Every SEO professional faces the same daily dilemma: they have 500 tasks to do, but only enough time to do 5.
Should you write a new 3,000-word guide? Should you fix the canonical tags on your blog? Should you update the title tags on your product pages?
If you choose tasks based on “gut feeling” or whoever is yelling the loudest, your organic growth will stall. To maximize ROI, you must use a mathematical SEO Prioritization Matrix.
Impact vs. Effort
A prioritization matrix plots every potential SEO task on a grid containing two axes: Impact (how much traffic/revenue will this generate?) and Effort (how many hours/dollars will this cost?).
The goal is to focus 80% of your energy on the “High Impact, Low Effort” quadrant—the elusive Quick Wins.
Historically, building this matrix required massive spreadsheets. You would export Ahrefs KD (Effort), Semrush Search Volume (Impact), and GSC current rankings, then use complex formulas to rank them.
Automating Prioritization
You don’t need a spreadsheet to find your “High Impact, Low Effort” tasks. You just need Kong Metrics.
The Opportunity Scoring algorithm within Kong Metrics is essentially an automated prioritization matrix built directly on top of your Google Search Console data.
The Scoring Framework
Kong Metrics analyzes every keyword in your portfolio and assigns it a score from 0 to 100 based on the exact principles of the matrix:
- Effort Calculation (Rank Proximity): Kong Metrics looks at your current ranking. If a keyword is at Position #12 (Page 2), the “Effort” to move it to Page 1 is extremely low. It gets a massive score boost.
- Impact Calculation (Traffic Potential): Kong Metrics takes your actual GSC Impressions and multiplies them by the Expected CTR of a top 3 position. If the potential traffic gain is huge, the score spikes.
Executing the Matrix
Instead of spending hours updating an Excel document, you simply open your Kong Metrics dashboard on Monday morning and sort your keywords by Opportunity Score.
The keywords scoring 85+ are your absolute highest-priority tasks. They require minimal effort (a content refresh or internal link) but will yield maximum traffic impact.
By letting Kong Metrics handle the math, you ensure your team is always working on the optimizations that will move the needle the fastest.
