How to Track Featured Snippet Traffic in Search Console

Kong Metrics Team · · 3 min read

Winning a Featured Snippet (often called “Position Zero”) is the holy grail of informational SEO. It places your content at the very top of the search results, above the standard blue links, often resulting in a massive influx of traffic.

However, once you win a snippet, reporting on it becomes a massive headache. Clients and stakeholders want to know exactly how much traffic the snippet is driving.

Can you track Featured Snippet traffic natively in Google Search Console?

Winning a featured snippet is not just a vanity metric—it is a clear signal that your content is considered the most authoritative and concise answer for a specific query. By optimizing for these opportunities, you can dominate the top of the SERP and significantly increase your organic click-through rate.

Position 0 Explained

A Featured Snippet is Google’s attempt to answer a user’s question directly on the SERP by extracting a paragraph, list, or table from a highly relevant webpage.

If your URL is chosen for the snippet, GSC records the impression and the click just like a normal ranking.

Can You Filter Snippets in GSC?

No. Google Search Console does not have a “Featured Snippet” filter. GSC treats a Featured Snippet exactly the same as a standard Position #1 ranking. If you own the snippet, GSC will report your average position for that query as 1.0.

Because of this, you cannot simply export a list of “all traffic from snippets” using the native web interface.

Measuring the CTR Impact of Snippets

Since GSC won’t explicitly label a snippet, you must use data anomalies to track them. The most glaring anomaly associated with a Featured Snippet is the Click-Through Rate (CTR).

While a standard Position #1 ranking might have an expected CTR of 28%, a Featured Snippet dominates so much screen real estate that its CTR can spike to 40%, 50%, or even 60%.

Using Kong Metrics to Spot Snippets

To track your snippet wins and losses, you must monitor your CTR curves against industry benchmarks. Kong Metrics automates this via the CTR Benchmark tool.

  1. Spotting the Win: If Kong Metrics shows a query jumping from a normal 25% CTR to a massive 55% CTR while maintaining a Position 1.0, you have almost certainly captured a Featured Snippet.
  2. Spotting the Loss: Conversely, if your Position stays at 1.0, but your CTR suddenly plummets back to 20%, you likely lost the snippet to a competitor, even though your “ranking” didn’t technically drop.

By using Kong Metrics to monitor extreme CTR deviations, you can accurately deduce your Featured Snippet performance and report the true value of Position Zero to your stakeholders.
